A new entry-level EV is heading our way. The Volvo EX30 is a small SUV that sits between the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge, but wait; there’s more.
This small and active SUV launches with a style that’s much more chic and alluring than most Volvo vehicles. The EX30 comes packed full of high-tech features and elements to make it an intriguing newcomer to the market. Volvo fits this new EV with either a single or dual-motor build to deliver plenty of power to the wheels. In fact, when equipped with the dual-motor layout, the new EX30 is the quickest-accelerating Volvo to date.
Volvo has begun the move to EX models
Instead of simply adding Recharge to the end of it’s already popular models, Volvo makes a naming transition to the EX models. This should make it much easier for consumers to know that Volvo EX models are electric crossovers rather than looking for the Recharge name. The new EX30 arrives in the summer to join the larger EX90 SUV. These two new electric models could spell the future of Volvo and its continued movement toward an electrified lineup.
The small EX30 should begin at a little more than $35,000 and range up to nearly $50,000, which makes this small luxury electric SUV relatively affordable. It’s unclear whether this new Volvo electric SUV will qualify for the Federal EV Tax Credit, but this pricing makes the EX30 relatively affordable.
How much power does Volvo give this little EV?
When the new Volvo EX30 arrives, it will have two power offerings. The Single Motor Extended Range version sends 268 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. This should be good enough to accelerate this little SUV to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.
The thrill of the Dual Motor Performance model is obvious. This version has two electric motors totaling 422 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque in an AWD layout. This means the EX30 can rocket to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, besting some of the top sports cars in the market.
Regardless of the version chosen, the EX30 has a 64.0-kWh battery pack, which is good enough to provide the single-motor version with 275 miles of driving range. The high-powered model should achieve up to 265 miles of driving, which is a fair trade-off for the added power.
The driving range might leave some owners wanting more, but for those with relatively short commutes, the Volvo EX30 could be a good option.
A greener world inside this Volvo
The new EX30 is developed with the goal of being greener and more sustainable than most other vehicles. Volvo uses recycled materials in the cabin for the upholstery. One of the most notable options uses denim waste and another uses sewn flax and wool made from recycled polyester.
Looking inside the cabin, we see a minimalist quality, which makes the EX30 feel like Scandinavians designed it. You will see some unique items, such as a centrally-located glovebox that fits under the infotainment screen, making it easier for the driver to reach this storage bin. The cup holders also fold when not used, which adds more space where desired.
Tesla design influence in a Volvo
Many electric vehicles have adopted Tesla’s stark and minimal styling, with a large central screen controlling all aspects of the vehicle. The same goes for the new Volvo EX30. This small SUV features a 12.3-inch screen that provides infotainment and gauge functionality on the display. Volvo includes a Google-based interface and programming, giving drivers Google Maps and wireless Apple CarPlay.
Another unique aspect of the new EX30 is the soundbar across the base of the dashboard. This item is offered in place of individual speakers to handle the driver’s sound needs and desires.
The sweet spot could be in the middle
This new Volvo electric SUV has two powertrain options but can be had in additional trim levels. The mid-range Plus trim uses the single-motor layout and has some added features that might make it the desirable choice. This version includes a panoramic sunroof, 19-inch wheels, and a Harman Kardon audio system.
The new Volvo EX30 could be an exciting vehicle from a brand with a strong reputation for safety. Forget the beige Volvo driven by Nicholas Cage’s character in “The Rock” this new electric SUV brings the heat with impressive acceleration and power. Of course, you can expect to find a full suite of advanced safety features that will make this new Volvo SUV a good choice for a small family.
Take the Volvo EX30 for a test drive this summer and see if it’s right for you.
