When you think of some of the attractive and impressive small sedans that you can drive and enjoy on the roads in your area, one of the favorites that often comes to mind is the Volkswagen Jetta. This is a car that has the European driving style we want to enjoy on the roads and has become one of the most popular choices in the US market from this brand. VW has had a habit of offering us easy to enjoy smaller vehicles that can be perfect for the drive we want to experience on the roads every day.
While the VW Jetta is produced in the US at the plant in Tennessee and it has been a huge success in the US, this doesn’t make it a popular model everywhere else. In countries where the roads are smaller, the desire for a vehicle that’s slightly larger is lessened a great deal. This isn’t the first foreign model that has been able to be a strong performer in the US but not anywhere else, the Nissan Maxima is another example of a car that is only sold in the US, and the Jetta may be on its way to that fate as well.
The UK Sales of the Jetta
As the Jetta near the end of its current generation, we know there will be another version made and that this car will premiere at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Even though the Jetta is a car we love, the population in Great Britain disagrees. Although the Jetta is a car that sells well here, this past year, there were only 379 sold in the UK. This is compared to 52,722 Golf models and 5,398 Passat versions that were sold in the same area.
The Scirocco that was discontinued, outsold the Jetta in the UK, which makes the decision to delete the car from the line make perfect sense. One of the reasons the Jetta has become a model that is not sold well in the UK is the movement toward small SUVs for the drive including a larger Polo model that is expected to well in the UK. It appears that the Jetta will be gone from the market in a hurry in the UK and those that want a small car from the Volkswagen brand will have to choose the Golf as the one they want to drive.
The UK isn’t the only market where this car won’t be offered as a popular choice any longer, many markets have moved away from the need for the Jetta, but it still is a car you want for the ride in the US when you want a small VW but don’t want the Golf. Once this model is out of the lineup in the UK, the Beetle will be the slowest selling model on the island and might be the next to go from the brand, even though the Beetle is the largest selling model in the entire world over its history.
