Despite posting its biggest earnings miss in four years, the stock has kept climbing, and that might seem puzzling at first glance. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find a company making aggressive moves to prepare for what’s coming, from bold Chinese partnership talks to a promising 2026 earnings outlook that has Wall Street cautiously optimistic.

Ford stock is up 7.6% so far this year, outpacing the S&P 500 Index, which has barely moved.

Ford’s 2026 guidance calls for adjusted EBIT between $8 billion and $10 billion, up from $6.8 billion last year.

Multiple reports have surfaced claiming Ford has been in discussions with Chinese companies including BYD, Geely, and Xiaomi regarding potential partnerships.

Q4 2025 Results Missed, But 2026 Guidance Turned Heads

Ford reported its largest quarterly earnings miss in four years in its Q4 2025 results, while guiding for 2026 to be a rebound year for the automaker. Adjusted earnings came in at 13 cents per share versus the 19 cents analysts expected, and automotive revenue hit $42.4 billion against expectations of $41.83 billion.

So what went wrong? The earnings miss was largely due to unexpected tariff costs of roughly $900 million related to credits for auto parts not taking effect as early as expected. Ford CFO Sherry House said the lower results were also tied to fires at a Novelis aluminum supplier plant in New York, which isn’t expected to be fully operational until the middle of 2026. The plant supplies Ford’s lucrative F-Series pickup trucks.

Despite all that, the forward-looking numbers grabbed investors’ attention. Ford’s 2026 guidance includes adjusted free cash flow between $5 billion and $6 billion, up from $3.5 billion in 2025, and capital expenditures of $9.5 billion to $10.5 billion, up from $8.8 billion. The company posted record 2025 revenue of $187.3 billion, up 1% from the prior year.

Ford Pro and Ford Blue Are Doing the Heavy Lifting

On a business unit level, Ford’s traditional and fleet operations are expected to offset $4 billion to $4.5 billion in losses this year from its “Model e” electric vehicle unit. Pre-tax earnings from “Ford Pro,” the fleet business, are projected at $6.5 billion to $7.5 billion, followed by $4 billion to $4.5 billion for the traditional “Blue” business.

Management expects about $1 billion in lower tariff costs and another $1 billion in industrial cost improvements in 2026, reinforcing the margin outlook. That kind of cost discipline makes the earnings rebound feel realistic rather than aspirational.

Ford is also getting into other income streams, which include mass-producing its battery technology for other companies and developing fleet software for commercial customers. That gives the company a wider base to work with during bumpy stretches in the car market.

What Those Chinese Partnership Talks Actually Mean

One of the biggest recent headlines around Ford has nothing to do with truck sales or dividends. Ford CEO Jim Farley spoke to senior Trump administration officials about a potential framework in which Chinese automakers could build cars in America while offering some protection for domestic companies.

The idea involved Chinese carmakers partnering with U.S. companies through joint ventures in which the American company holds a controlling stake. No decision has been made and the discussion was characterized as informal and preliminary.

In the past few weeks, Ford reportedly held talks with several leading Chinese EV makers, including BYD and Geely, about potential partnerships. In December, Ford expanded a licensing agreement with CATL from building cells for electric vehicles to also manufacturing stationary power sources for utilities and data centers.

This is a company that’s clearly trying to get out ahead of what could be the auto industry’s next big shakeup, with affordable Chinese EVs potentially hitting the American market in a serious way.

Ford Stock Won’t Stop Going Up, But Is It Sustainable?

Over the last year, Ford’s share price return is 48.3%, compared with 3.6% year to date. The Ford 52-week high stock price sits at $14.50, while the 52-week low was $8.44.

A valuation model from TIKR estimates a target price of $17.38, implying about 23.1% total upside over the next 2.9 years and a 7.5% annualized return. Ford’s stock also holds a 4.4% dividend yield, balancing income with vehicle and software sales.

And this might be the real anchor for many investors. Even if the stock price goes sideways for a while, you’re still collecting a healthy dividend check. Combined with the fact that Ford stock won’t stop going up so far in 2026, it paints a picture of a legacy automaker figuring out its next chapter.

Is Ford a Buy Right Now?

Wall Street made 21 recommendations for Ford in January, and 16 of them were Holds. That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it’s not a warning sign either. It tells you this is a stock people are comfortable owning while they wait for the bigger story to play out.

Ford has settled on an “everything for everyone” approach to its lineup that gives buyers a choice between gas, hybrid, and all-electric vehicles. Tariffs remain uncertain, raising prices on raw materials and electronic components that Ford needs to produce vehicles. The company’s EV unit is still bleeding cash, and Chinese competition looms large.

But Ford is doing what a 120-year-old company does best: adapt. With record revenue in the rearview mirror, a promising 2026 outlook on the dashboard, and some genuinely interesting strategic conversations taking shape, Ford’s stock momentum has more substance behind it than many investors might expect.

Ford Motor Company has been having a quietly strong start to 2026.
