Car warranties cover the cost of a repair bill if your car has a mechanical problem that needs to
be fixed. New cars come with factory warranties that cover many parts, including the engine,
brakes, suspension, and gearbox. Once the original factory warranty expires, you can still get

The Factory Warranty
The manufacturer’s warranty or the new car warranty comes with every new car. What it
covers and for how long depends on the automaker, but they typically last for three to five
years or up to a certain number of miles. Every new Ford vehicle comes with a three-
year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a five-year 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
The basic warranty covers any part that’s found to be defective due to workmanship or in
factory-supplied material.
These types of warranties are also called bumper-to-bumper because
they cover almost all of the mechanical and electrical components that you’ll find between the
front and rear bumpers. The powertrain warranty covers all the important components that
make the vehicle move. This means the engine, axles, wheels, and transmission.
What Doesn’t a Warranty Cover?
While these new car warranties cover a lot of components, they don’t cover parts that are
made to wear out under normal use. Your brake pads, for instance, are not covered under
warranty because they will wear out over time. If you make aftermarket modifications to your
vehicle, the warranty will not cover these new components, and if there’s any damage caused
to the original parts due to alterations, they will no longer be covered under warranty.
What Happens When the Original Warranty Expires?
Cars are designed to last longer than the warranty on the original components, but you can still
find coverage to help cover the cost of repairs if you run into a problem after the warranty
expires. The Ford extended warranty program is a plan you can get for your Ford. It covers not
only the cost of the parts needed to make repairs but also the cost of labor. When the three-
year/36,000-mile warranty expires, this extended plan can last for another 10 years or 175,000
miles.
Just like the original warranty, the Ford extended warranty covers the failure of components as
a result of defects in the material or workmanship. You can use the warranty to pay for
repairs as long as the failure happens under normal use and if it’s due to normal wear and tear.
If you decide to drive your car through deep water or you get into an accident, the warranty will
not cover the cost of the repairs.
Other Warranties
While the new car warranty and the powertrain warranty are the most comprehensive
warranties that come with new cars, there are also several others. A new car may also come
with a corrosion warranty, a safety restraint warranty, and an emissions warranty. Hybrid and
electric vehicles will have these coverages and also a warranty on the battery that lasts for eight
years.
