Toyota RAV4 Prime and Hyundai Tucson PHEV Lead Hybrid Race

Toyota and Hyundai face off to see who can make the best hybrid vehicle, but the contest is a close one to call because both of these cars are absolutely awesome. In the meantime, we can take a look at each of them respectively.

The world is getting closer and closer to the reality of electric vehicles and lower gas consumption. But we are not quite there yet. Toyota and Hyundai have engineered SUVs, which are in high demand right now, that use both electricity and fuel. They are the perfect in-between for those looking to test out electric travel without the fear of running out of battery on the side of the road.

Both the Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson started as gas-only options, but the two automotive giants have given customers the option to steer towards newer, more innovative takes on fuel economy.

The Toyota RAV4 and the Hyundai Tucson are two of the most popular SUVs in production right now. People are looking for EVs and hybrids, and these two cars might be in line for a massive tick in demand. Keep reading to learn more about these hybrids.

Two Top Plug-In Hybrid SUVs

What makes these vehicles special is that they are both plug-ins. What does that even mean, though? Well, there are three main types of hybrid vehicles, and each has its own way of operating. There are mild hybrids, full hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. All three are powered by a battery and an internal combustion engine (ICE).

The Toyota RAV4 Prime is a plug-in, and so is the Hyundai Tucson PHEV. This means while both other types have internal charging sources, such as regenerative braking, plug-ins also use external charging sources (either at home or public charging stations). Drivers who have shorter commutes might rarely depend on the ICE, which reduces emissions and saves money at the fuel pump.

Performance and Range

These two SUVs, the Toyota RAV4 Prime and the Hyundai Tucson, are top-rated because of their size and their versatility. Midsize vehicles pack a lot of power and performance. How do they compare now that they are hybrid vehicles?

The RAV4’s speed and fuel economy are very, very good. The vehicle gets 302 horsepower and a combined 38 mpg. Not only can this car go fast, but it hardly uses any fuel. That is an unbeatable combination. The Hyundai, on the other hand, does not go as fast, and it does not get as good mileage, either. With 261 horsepower and 35 mpg, the Tucson PHEV falls short of the RAV4.

That said, the Hyundai Tucson PHEV does better than the RAV4 in some areas. Although the RAV4’s speed and acceleration are good, Tucson’s handling and responsiveness are unmatched. Lastly, the RAV4’s range in EV mode is 48 miles until the battery switches off and fuel is used again. Likewise, Tucson’s battery range is 33 miles.

Tech and Other Creature Comforts

Both the Tucson and the RAV4 Prime are roomy and comfortable, with plenty of standard features that make spending time in them a joy. And they each come with a full suite of infotainment and safety technology.

Which one is best for you? Both of them are worth a test drive.
