Rugged off-road ability meets modern EV power in the new 2022 GMC Hummer EV which is the ultra-truck you want to drive.
Juiced up by Ultium batteries, made tougher with the GMC brand of protection, and wearing a name that has been known to tackle any terrain, this new truck is on the way to dealerships to be the brute you could take out for some amazing adventures. The only question that remains for you is, which version of this GMC truck will be the one you want to trust for your time in the wilderness?
Four Models Will Wear the Name
Eventually, the Hummer EV will be offered in for different models. The first to arrive is the Edition 1, which is the top model with all the bells and whistles you can think of. Later this year, the EV3X version will make it to dealerships to give us a truck with just a little less than the Edition 1. The EV2X will follow in 2023, with the EV2 rounding out the mix. As we move from the first to the final version of this truck, you’ll see the price decrease rapidly, giving you four distinct price ranges to choose from.
The Differences We Know Now
Because the lineup of Hummer EV trucks will stretch across three model years, we don’t know everything about what each one will have, but we do know quite a bit. With that in mind, here’s a highlight of what you can expect as each version appears:
Edition 1
The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 is the fully-loaded model that is priced at $112,595. This truck is packed with incredible features, including a three-motor drive system, a 24-module Ultium battery pack, Super Cruise with automatic lane-change, Crab Walk, Extract Mode, an adaptive air suspension, and 35-inch tires, just to name a few of the items offered.
EV3X
This version of the Hummer will come in at a price of just over $100,000. You’ll have the benefits of the three-motor drive system, torque vectoring, and Watts to Freedom with this impressive truck. The Watts to Freedom feature is a launch control system that allows this big brute to accelerate to sixty mph in only three seconds.
EV2X
Pricing for the EV2X will start at $90,000. If you’re willing to wait one model year for the Hummer EV you want to drive, this could be the right one for you. This model will have a 2-motor drive system, adaptive air suspension, Craw Walk, and Extract mode, giving you many of the features you want in this GMC truck.
EV2
The final model offered for this GMC truck will be the EV2. Priced at just over $80,000, this truck will feature the 2-motor drive system, and it will have a “basic” package of standard features. To enjoy this truck, you’ll have to wait two model years for it to arrive.
If You’re Going to Buy a GMC Hummer EV this Year…
If you’ve got your mind made up and you want to get in on the action right now, the Edition 1 is the GMC truck for you. That being said, you should probably know more about a few of the extremely cool and well-named features of this immense off-road brute.
Crab Walk
The Crab Walk feature of the Hummer EV is a system that uses four-wheel steering to direct the rear wheels and help make the drive better on and off the roads. The rear wheels can turn up to ten degrees in either direction. If the Crab Walk Mode is engaged, the rear wheels and the front wheels turn in the same direction, allowing this truck to move in a diagonal path. When this feature is not engaged, these rear wheels typically turn in the opposite direction to aid in cornering.
Watts to Freedom
As mentioned, the Watts to Freedom feature is a launch control system that can be engaged and give you incredible acceleration on the road. When you want to prove to your buddies that you can accelerate faster than they can, this is the system you’ll use. The system uses haptic feedback and animations to make it more fun for you, but the most fun will be blowing past your friends as you rocket your way to the end of a drag strip.
Infinity Roof
The GMC Hummer EV is made to be a tough and rugged off-roader. With that in mind, there will be times when you want to remove the roof and other times when you don’t. The Infinity Roof is a lightweight, transparent roof system that is removable in panels without using any tools. This roof can store easily in the truck to be ready when you need to put it back on the vehicle.
UltraVision
One of the biggest challenges found in off-roading is being able to see where you are going or what you’re driving over. The UltraVision feature of this GMC truck helps with that. You’ll have numerous cameras mounted outside the vehicle, including a few that are placed under the body, to give you the views of everything you need. This system acts as a virtual spotter to help you navigate the trails. There are 18 cameras in total, giving you a clear picture of the terrain.
Armored Underside
To enjoy the fun and adventure that awaits you in the wilderness, you need to have plenty of protection to keep you out of trouble. The GMC Hummer EV gives you five skid plates/rock sliders and two underbody shields that protect the battery pack and drive units. You’ll have a hard time bashing into something that can get through the armor plating under this impressive truck.
