Hyundai Tucson Plug-in: A Highly Rated Hybrid SUV

Hyundai Tucson Plug-in A Highly Rated Hybrid SUV

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in represents a comfortable transition to electric for people who haven’t come to terms yet with the electric revolution. This fast-charging model rates highly for safety, range of travel, comfort, and convenience.

Combustion & Charging in the Tucson Plug-in

The Tucson Plug-in combustion engine is a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder with a six-speed transmission, a nice thing to know for people who prefer to ease into all-electric driving. Once you’re ready to charge it up, the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in gives you a 13.8-kWh battery and an electric engine that generates up to 90 hp.

Of course, efficiency and performance are key points for the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in, as with any hybrid vehicle. Hyundai’s version will deliver 80 MPG driving on electric/gas, and 35 MPG on gas. The battery can be completely charged in about two hours (with a 240V outlet) and will take you up to 33 miles going electric (the total overall range is more than 400 miles). In other words, your investment in the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in will earn you a hefty return on fuel savings.

An Impressive Legacy

The Hyundai Tucson Plug-in is a worthy inheritor of Hyundai’s impressive safety legacy. In fact, Hyundai’s latest entry in the SUV field claimed the top spot in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rankings for 2022. Most of Hyundai’s safety features come standard on the Tucson Plug-in hybrid model.
Driver assistance features include driver-attention warning, lane-maintaining warning, forward collision assistance, blind-spot collision avoidance, and more. And don’t forget Hyundai’s Highway Drive-Assist semi-autonomous driving package.

Bigger and Better

If you look closely at the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in, you might get the sense that the 2022 model is bigger than recent versions, and you’d be correct. It’s approximately six inches long and a tad wider than the 2021 model. That translates into slightly more legroom and cargo space (the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in seats five adults).

In fact, Hyundai claims that the new Plug-in is one of the biggest SUVs in its class, with more than 108 cubic feet of passenger space and nearly 40 cubic feet of baggage room. The exterior’s svelte, symmetrical look is accentuated by half-mirror running lights that become visible when lit. The wider taillight is also visible only when activated.

New Tech and Safety in the Tucson Plug-in

Passenger and cargo space aren’t the only features that have gotten bigger. At eight inches, the control touchscreen is an inch larger than last year’s version and controls Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Don’t worry if you and your significant other own two different kinds of mobile devices because two phones can connect at the same time.

Pricing

The SEL all-wheel drive stickers for $34,750, with the Limited all-wheel-drive trim coming in at $42,500. Both are priced slightly below fair-market value, making the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in a good investment, with abundant interior space, a good travel range, and a pleasing new exterior.

All in all, it is a good SUV buy for the money, especially so if you add in Hyundai’s typically strong warranty package. You get a 60-month/60,000-mile full warranty, a 120-month/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, as well as corrosion and maintenance warranties. If you choose to go hybrid, rest assured Hyundai has you covered in every aspect, from safety to economy and technology.
