The Nissan Ambition 2030 Plan has mixed reviews, but stock traders were certainly interested in the announcement that came with this new EV plan.
The latest numbers show growth of the Nissan stock in the market, which will certainly aid in the investment needed to bring this brand from where it is to the electrified future through this new plan. Some may think the plan is a bit late, and others might feel that this is the right time for an ambitious plan to be put in place. With that in mind, it might be time to peel back some of the layers of what Nissan has in store for the future.
The Nissan Leaf has been Eclipsed
For many years, the Nissan Leaf was the best-selling and most popular electric car in the market. That’s no longer the case. With so many new electric models being offered, the market share that the Leaf previously had is pretty much gone. There was a time when the thought of electric SUVs and trucks could not be imagined, and now we see vehicles such as the GMC Hummer EV and the Hyundai Kona EV that fill both of these areas of the market. The Leaf no longer has its stranglehold on the EV market.
Foundational Elements
The foundational elements of the new Nissan Ambition 2030 Plan give us the goals for this company over the next several years. Those elements are:
- An accelerated electrification plan with a $17 billion investment over the next five years
- 23 new electrified models with 15 new EVs to reach 50 percent electrification by 2030
- The introduction of the proprietary all-solid state batteries (ASSB) by 2028
How is Nissan going to accomplish this? Will traditional models such as the Nissan Pathfinder be impacted by this plan?
Cutting Through the Fluff
Sometimes, when you read a press release, there are tons of fluffy words that make everything sound wonderful, futuristic, and cohesive. The press release for this new plan came with many of those words, but the most important part of what Nissan intends to do is become a carbon-neutral company by 2050. That means they intend to address every aspect of their manufacturing process to ensure they aren’t polluting the world in any manner. This could mean Nissan becomes environmentally positive, but that is a massive undertaking for any company.
The Sales Mix Will Change
The sales mixture of vehicles you see at your local Nissan dealer will change to include up to 20 new EV models and e-POWER equipped vehicles over the next five years. Part of the Nissan Ambition 2030 Plan is to have the following mixture of electrified vehicles by 2026:
- Europe – 75 percent of sales
- Japan – 55 percent of sales
- China – 40 percent of sales
- United States – 40 percent of sales by 2030
In addition to changing the sales mix to add more electrification, Nissan will unveil three new concept cars in the next few years for us to review.
Wait, What Does it Mean to have Electrified Vehicles?
The verbiage used in the Nissan announcement tells us they intend to “accelerate electrification plans” and bring a lineup of “electrified” vehicles. If you understand what this means, you might be one of the people that isn’t too impressed with this movement. While this brand had laid out a plan to add more EV models, offering electrified vehicles isn’t the same thing. This means we are likely to see a lineup filled with hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of some of the Nissan models we already love. Will you buy a hybrid Nissan Pathfinder, Frontier, Titan, Rogue, Sentra, Altima, or Maxima? That is likely what we will see first.
Nissan ASSB Technology for the Future
Whether you’re skeptical about the lineup of electrified Nissan models, we will see in the future or not, the fact that Nissan added part of the plan to include ASSBs for the future models would make a huge difference. These new batteries are going to be built in a new pilot plant in Yokohama, which could begin production of these new batteries as early as 2024.
When ASSB technology is part of the mix, these batteries are expected to be more affordable and offer reduced charging times to one-third of the lithium-ion batteries that are in most of the EVs we see today. This could be a huge step forward for the Nissan brand. One of the greatest challenges when shopping for an EV is getting over the charging time it will take to keep an EV charged and on the road when ready to head out for a road trip. We could see Nissan models making their way across the country in the same timeframe as gasoline-powered vehicles in the near future.
More Jobs within this New Plan
The Nissan Ambition 2030 Plan will not only advance electrification and technology for the brand, and it won’t simply be an investment into the future, but it will also mean more jobs for employees in the automotive sector. Part of the plan is to hire more than 3,000 new employees in advanced research and development of the safety systems that will continue to be a huge part of what we see in Nissan models. This means the ProPilot system can evolve and grow, and more people will have jobs to help bring this new ambitious plan from the idea phase to reality.
Which Side of the Conversation?
Are you supporting the idea that Nissan is working for the betterment of the future of driving and the environment with this new plan, or do you feel this new plan is a little late, considering how many other automakers have already made bold announcements? Nissan has shown some futuristic and bizarre concepts that could be polarizing as some of the future EV models that might make it the market. Are you ready to invest in Nissan stocks, which have risen since the Nissan Ambition 2030 Plan was announced, or are you hoping the Nissan Pathfinder and other traditional models don’t change much at all?
