Expanding the Lineup – Mazda’s New SUVs

The Mazda CX-3, CX-5, and CX-9 have been the trio of SUVs that you could always find at your local Mazda dealer for the past several years. For a short time, we saw another model slot in there called the CX-7, but that model didn’t last too long.

Over the past couple of model cycles, we’ve seen two new models added, which have opened the doors to more models entering the market and becoming part of the lineup. When the 2023 model year arrives, the Mazda SUV lineup will look a whole lot different than it has previously.

Already, a Model Replaced

The 2021 model year introduced us to the new Mazda CX-30. This SUV came in gently, and we were told it was meant to slot between the Mazda CX-3 and CX-5, but the writing was already on the wall. Rumors have been confirmed, and we will no longer see the CX-3 offered by the Mazda brand. That’s not a big surprise considering the packaging and right price of the CX-30. Even though this new model was supposed to add to the lineup simply, it was easy to see how it could push the smaller SUV out of the way.
With the addition of the CX-30, the lines are blurred the way that Mazda likes them to be. This brand is notorious for giving us vehicles that straddle lines and don’t fit into specific classes. Consider the fact that the entire brand lineup could easily be part of the premium class of vehicles, but we continue to put Mazda in the mainstream class. With a larger build, more power, and excellent style, it won’t be long before we forget about the Mazda CX-3 and simply accept the excellence of the CX-30.

What’s Coming for 2023?

We know the expansion of the Mazda SUV lineup will leave out the CX-3 by 2023, and 2022 will bring in a new MX-30 which is a small electric SUV, but what will the entire lineup look like by 2023? Mazda has announced three new SUVs will be added to the lineup by that time to give us a total of seven to choose from. These new models will be the CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90. That’s going to be a lot of options for you when it’s time to pick out the Mazda SUV that you want to drive.

Hold On, Just a Minute…

Seven might just be too many SUVs to choose from, especially from an automaker that has had a complete lineup with only six models for a long time. The 2023 model year will see yet another Mazda SUV gone from the lineup. In a similar fashion to the Mazda CX-3, the CX-9 will no longer be offered and replaced by the CX-90. This shouldn’t come as a surprise; this brand isn’t set up to have two SUVs that offer three rows of seats.

What Are These New SUVs Expected to Offer

The first 2023 models to arrive will be the CX-50 which will use the same platform as the CX-30. The difference will be the size of the vehicle. Still, you can expect to enjoy the same driving dynamics, impressive features, and high-quality interior style that you find in other Mazda models.Later in the year, we will see the new CX-70 and CX-90 offered. These two SUVs will ride on the new longitudinal architecture being created by Mazda. Both will be powered by six-cylinder engines and offer plug-in hybrid variants to give you the choices you’re looking for.
The CX-70 will be a midsize model with two rows of seats to offer the comfort you want and compete with other two-row midsize SUVs, while the CX-90 will have three rows of seats and be larger than the current CX-9.

Two CX-5 Models Sold Together

At first, we won’t see the CX-5 deleted from the lineup when the CX-50 debuts in the market. With the CX-50 arriving in November, we will soon know much more about what this vehicle will offer. The CX-50 is being produced in the Huntsville, Alabama plant, starting in January before it heads to dealers by the middle of next year. Will the new Mazda CX-50 eventually replace the CX-5? The time and sales will tell the story.

The Powertrain Options of the Larger Mazda SUVs

As the new platform is used and the Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 enter production, the powertrains offered will give you the choices you want when you’re looking for your next SUV to drive. As mentioned, both will have either a six-cylinder engine or a plug-in hybrid powertrain. To be more specific, these options are either a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that will be powerful and quick or an inline four-cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors and a range of all-electric driving.

Are You Ready for New Mazda SUVs?

If you’ve been looking at the current model year lineup of Mazda vehicles and wondering why you haven’t seen the Mazda CX-5 offered for 2022, you have your answer. If you find a remaining 2021 model of this SUV, you’ll probably find it at a great price. As for the rest of the current lineup, it’s waiting for you while we all wait to see what these new SUVs will give us in the Mazda lineup.
The addition of the CX-70 and CX-90 are departures from what Mazda has been using for the past few years. Every vehicle in the lineup has been powered by only four cylinders, and we haven’t had a hybrid version of any of these vehicles. The 2023 model year is going to be an exciting and fun time for us to review the Mazda models offered. It’s time for Mazda to add these new models and give us powertrains that embrace hybrid technology and electric driving, which is what we’re going to finally see when these new models arrive next year.
