Nissan Altima: Excellent Standards and Quicker Than You Think

Nissan Altima: Excellent Standards and Quicker Than You Think

If you prefer fast over frugal (but still want to party in the 4-cylinder range), then it’s time to consider a Nissan Altima.

There’s nothing wrong with subcompact cars like the Nissan Versa. They’re deceptively roomy, with plush seats. And the gas mileage is a plus.

But if you’re a car shopper that is looking for more kick than subcompact, then the Versa is not the way to go. There’s nothing wrong with a Versa, especially if your goal is to be the Fonzie of Frugality.

Nissan Altima: Sneaky Fast Four-Cylinder

You’re not going to beat a Dodge Challenger Hellcat off the blocks in a Nissan Altima—or any other mid-size sedan for that matter.

But you won’t have to turn off the air conditioner to merge onto the freeway either (looking at you, Chevrolet CMV).

How Does the Altima Rank stack up against other popular mid-size sedans?

With an average 0-60 time under 8 seconds, the Altima is within range of its closest competitors.

But if you’re in the $25,000 range for mid-size sedans, speed shouldn’t be your only consideration. The Altima is tough to beat when it comes to standard packages, for one.

Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry, although rated as a mid-size, is a sales behemoth. The Camry is popular for a reason, it’s a quality car. But if you’re pulling your purchase trigger based on standard options, the Altima gets the nod.

Advantage: Altima

Honda Accord LX

The Honda Accord (7.2) is a hair faster than the Nissan Altima’s average 0-60. But, would you trade 1/10th of a second in speed for a savings of around $1,000? That’s the approximate savings of a new 2021 base level Altima as opposed to a base level Accord.

Advantage: Nissan Altima

Subaru Legacy

We’ll keep this one brief. The Subaru Legacy is slower (8.4) and is less fuel-efficient than Nissan Altima (28/39 : 27/35).

Advantage: Nissan Altima

Kia Optima

The Kia Optima is a fast mid-size sedan clocking in at 6.8 seconds in the 0-60. Its gas mileage is very comparable to the Altima’s too. One thing to consider is the interior’s noise level when the engine is running full tilt. Rated as the quieter of the two options, the Nissan Altima gets the nod for quiet cab.
