How Many Wheels Are Turning?
One of the first things you should consider when evaluating a winter pickup is what kind of transmission is moving the wheels. Your best bet is to drive something with a four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. Having one of these will ensure that all of the tires are working to keep you from getting stuck. Even with these options, you might hit some slippery spots. It’s always wise to have some weight in the back of the bed to help keep the back wheels from spinning too much.
The other thing to consider is automatic transmission vs. a manual option. There’s nothing wrong with an automatic tranny in the snow. There are times, however, when the control of a manual transmission comes in handy. Starting in second gear is a great way to keep from spinning, as well as the “forward and back” technique.

When you know those winter storms are coming, it’s prudent to throw on a set of winter tires on your used truck. All-terrain tires are great the rest of the year, but they just don’t cut it during the colder months.
Winter tires are made from specialized rubber that produces a better grip. They also sport better tread depths, treat patterns, and biting edges. Combined, this gives you a better shot at getting a good grip on the road.
Check For Ground Clearance
Most 4x4s and off-road trucks are already lifted and sit a little higher than their rivals. Some street pickups also have extra ground clearance. Believe it or not, those few extra inches can make a huge difference.
There are several benefits to having more ground clearance. Mostly, it helps you avoid the ice and snow that can cause you to get stuck or slide. You can also avoid ice or rocks that might damage the underside of your truck. Nothing stops you in your tracks more than a damaged oil pan.
While you’re checking your used truck’s ground clearance, make sure to investigate if it has a front skid plate as well. This skid plate and can help clear the path, even if you’re not that high off of the ground.
Modern Technology Is Your Friend in the Snow
Many used trucks have cold-weather features that make driving safer and more fun. Check out things like heated exterior mirrors, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel that turn cold days into a pleasant driving experience.
You might even look for a used truck that has a remote start and remote climate control options. That would mean easily letting your pickup warm up long before you have to hit the road.

Driving in the snow means dealing with more dangerous conditions than a regular, dry road. Always take care and give yourself extra trim to arrive at your destination.
