Ram has recently shown us their new lineup of heavy-duty models that will be the 2500 and 3500 series of the big trucks that we love. Ram has had a habit of offering us their off-road ready models in the 2500 lineup with the Power Wagon. Rather than being a dune-busting machine with speed in its heart, the Power Wagon has been and will continue to be one of the most engaging and capable off-road trucks on the market. This truck is a perfect match for anyone who wants to head out on the trails for a great drive.
Is the Power Wagon Missing Something?
As we take a look at the new Ram Power Wagon we can only notice and maybe lament the fact that this big truck is still not offered with a diesel powertrain. A diesel engine seems like a perfect match for this truck with its low-end torque and improved fuel economy that we’ve seen in the other Cummins diesel engine offerings. With the number of possible positive attributes of a diesel engine, the question was raised and answered to let us know why we only have a gasoline offering in this big truck.
Fitting the Diesel Engine Requires Compromise
When you purchase a Ram Power Wagon you know that you’re going to have a winch behind the bumper which is part of the standard package of features. The longer build of a straight-six turbodiesel engine doesn’t leave room for this winch to be positioned where we’ve seen it in the past. This is a compromise that Ram wasn’t willing to make and it certainly is something we demand in the Power Wagon. This means the engine wasn’t going to fit with the winch and Ram had to make a choice.
Additionally, the Ram Power Wagon has become known for the articulation of the suspension setup that makes it possible for this truck to handle the job of rolling over rocks and boulders with ease. A diesel engine would require a slightly different suspension setup that would have worse articulation than what we have with the gasoline model. This change would hamper the off-road capability of the Ram Power Wagon, which is unacceptable and takes away from what this big Ram can be when we take it out on the trails for a great ride.
Is There Demand for a Diesel?
Those who choose the Ram Power Wagon know they’re getting one of the most impressive Hemi V8 gasoline engines under the hood for the drive. The demand for a diesel engine isn’t enough to change the personality of this truck at all. The new Ram Power Wagon might be missing something, but it’s not something that we’re going to miss. If a diesel engine was offered, you wouldn’t have the standard winch or the level of capability this truck has right now. Both of these are things you would certainly miss if they weren’t part of the truck that you choose to drive on the trails.
