What You’d Never Expect: Recall

What You’d Never Expect

Imagine you’re driving down the road in your Ford Fusion or Lincoln MKZ when suddenly you no longer have any steering control of the vehicle. You’ve got to react, but if you’re in the middle of a turn or on a road that’s going to curve and twist and turn, you will likely be in an accident. If you are aware enough to react quickly, you’ll likely stop the car and prepare to try and solve the problem of having no steering controls any longer, but can you trust the car you’re driving once the steering function returns?
Ford has issued a recall for this problem. They have reported that the steering wheel fastening bolts can become loose over time and eventually completely detach themselves from the wheel to lead to a complete loss of steering controls while you’re driving. This recall affects 1.4 million Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ models in the North American market. If you own either one of these vehicles, you need to take a look at what could happen to you and make sure you take care of the recall right away to have this issue resolved at your nearby dealership.

More Recall Details

So far, there are two reported accidents and one injury that have been the result of this problem with the steering wheel bolts. Considering the number of vehicles this recall affects, it’s amazing these numbers aren’t greater. Ford is working to make sure the recall notices are sent out right away so that owners can bring their affected models to the dealership to have these bolts replaced. Imagine the fear you would feel if your car suddenly stopped being able to steer when on the road; this should be enough to make sure you bring your Fusion or MKZ in for the recall repair.

The affected vehicles have been built in the Ford Flat Rock, MI plant between August 6, 2013 and February 29, 2016 as well as at the Hermosillo, Mexico plant from July 25, 2013 through March 5, 2018. The model years affected are 2014 to 2017 and most of the affected vehicles are currently being driven on the roads in the US, but some models reside in Canada and Mexico that have also been affected by this recall. If your vehicle is one of the models listed, you need to bring it to your nearby Ford dealership right away.

What will the Ford dealership do to repair your vehicle and execute this recall? They will install longer steering wheel bolts in your vehicle that have improved threads. They will also use a larger nylon patch for better bolt retention to make sure you won’t have the problem of losing the steering function of your vehicle again. If you’re driving around in a vehicle that’s part of this recall and you haven’t brought it in for this repair, it’s time to head to the Ford dealership and let them give you the peace of mind you need with steering controls you can trust.
