Performance matters and some cars have been given to sports stars as awards for winning. One such car was a historic Corvette.
For many years, one of the awards given to the MVP of the Super Bowl has been a vehicle of some sort. The first one of these was a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible that was given to Bart Starr after he was named the MVP for Super Bowl I. This car is one that shows off with the performance that certainly mimics the man who it was awarded to and this particular car is ready to add another chapter to the story in a few short days.
The Win and the Corvette
The date was January 15, 1967, and the Green Bay Packers were able to topple the Kansas City Chiefs by a score of 35-10 in the first AFL-NFL World Championship game which was later named Super Bowl I. The winning quarterback that day was Bart Starr, who was named MVP of the game with a performance that showed up as completing 16 of 23 passes for 250 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception during the game. While that performance might be paltry in today’s game, it was a sight for the ages and certainly worthy of the distinction of MVP.
The MVP Corvette and its Story
The car awarded to Bart Starr was a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and this car is one that’s about to go up for auction. The car is documented with a tank sticker that says “Courtesy Delivery –B. Starr” and it was painted in Goodwood Green paint to match the jerseys of the Green Bay Packers home uniforms. The mileage on the odometer reads 48,000 and that mileage is believed to be original. Other than a slight touch up to the pain, this car is in original condition and is certainly one that any NFL fan, especially a Packers fan, would love.
Starr’s Corvette has Made the Rounds
This car has changed hands a few times over the years. The car was only owned by Starr for a short time and then was owned by a woman in Wausau, WI for twenty years. In 1994 she sold it to Michael Anderson, owner of Thunder Valley Classic Cars of St. Joseph, MN which specializes in Corvettes. Even though Anderson has restored several Corvettes and won a variety of awards, he decided to only clean and recondition the underside of this Corvette to allow it to remain original and be a special part of automotive and NFL history.
Amazing Power for the Car a Starr Owned
Under the hood of this special Corvette is a 327-cubic-inch V8 engine that pumps out 300 horsepower while being attached to a Muncie four-speed manual transmission. This car is said to drive well and has all the numbers that match to show this is the original car that was awarded to the Hall of Fame quarterback after winning the first-ever Super Bowl. This car will be offered at auction in Indianapolis at the Mecum Auction and it should certainly bring in a high price considering the winner of the car and the condition it’s in.
