While you may encounter a large number of people that invoke your road rage feelings and make it possible for you to show the hand gestures you typically keep to yourself, the fact is you might not live in the states with the worst drivers in the country. Based upon the studies done, there are five states you need to avoid based upon the accident rate, speeding tickets, DUIs, citations, and fatalities, you’ll either want to be extra careful if you live in one of these locations or you need to make this a consideration when you’re thinking of making a move.
Beware Driving in These States
Washington – This state actually dropped from ninth worst to fifth worst since last year and is one of the worst states for you to drive in. This is based upon the accident rate which went from 33rd worst to 14th worst in just one year. That’s enough, without considering the rest of the factors, to make this the state that you should avoid as one of the top five where the drivers are the worst and seem to have little regard for each other, which also means your insurance rates will be extremely high in Washington.
South Carolina – Even though this state doesn’t have a large population, it is one of the locations that have the worst drivers in the country. This state moved from the sixth worst to fourth worst in one year because there was an extremely large jump in the number of DUIs over the past year. Whether that means there were more people driving drunk on the road or the law enforcement officials were simply better at catching them, you might want to avoid South Carolina if you want to be safe on the road and not run into someone who is inebriated behind the wheel.
Utah – The city of Salt Lake City is the second worst in the entire country which puts this state in the third place on the list as close to the worst in the entire country. Last year, this was the worst state in the country which means we’ve seen a bit of an improvement this year. The improvement happened in accidents, speeding, DUIs, and citations this year, but traffic deaths continue to increase and have done so for the past four years in a row, making this one of the worst states for you to drive in.
Minnesota – Not only is Minnesota the second worst state for driving in the country, it’s jumped from being the 11th worst to the runner up in just one year. There was a huge increase in the number of accidents, speeding, and citations. Some of the factors that certainly can help contribute to putting Minnesota near the bottom for safety is the fact that the weather is awful more of the time than in many other states. There is always ice, snow, and the potential for tornadoes, which make driving a challenge in this northern location.
California – Last year this was the state that was the runner-up, but this year it’s the worst state when it comes to safe driving on the roads. Five of the top ten cities that have the worst drivers are in California with Sacramento being the absolute worst driving city in the entire country. There has been an alarming increase in the number of citations and DUIs which makes this the state with the worst standard for the number of DUIs given out throughout the past year. If you can avoid driving in California, you certainly should stay away and off the roads.
