Will Honda Bring it Back?

Will we have the sports car that sat at the top of the Honda lineup reinvented and brought back for the future? The Honda S2000 has been a car that we’ve admired and enjoyed for the drive we’ve wanted for many years and rumors surfaced just a couple years ago that offered us the possibility of a “baby NSX” that could be part of the future of Honda. The patent drawings that surfaced for the models that were leaked ended up being for the Vision Gran Turismo concept, which put out the fire and the call for the S2000 for a short time.
There have been many that have called for a reinvention of the S2000 for several years, but Honda has held steadfast that it’s not the time to bring this car back yet. Instead, they have continually invested their money into the NSX and Civic Type R to be the sports cars that we admire and desire from Acura and Honda right now. Even with the continued development of these two cars we still see a hole at the top of the market that needs to be filled and the right choice to do that is the S2000.

What could the Honda S2000 become?

The language used for the S2000 as this question has come up at the Tokyo Motor Show has been whether or not to reinvent this car. The question of whether or not the development has matured or the market has opened up the possibility of being able to have the drive and the performance desired for this car. There is a call for this car to return to the market in Japan, North America, Europe, and China and more voices are coming out to ask this car is brought back.

The challenge for Honda is where to put the S2000 if they decide to bring it back. The original S2000 was a front-engine model but the thought it this could be a mid-engine car that would look and feel like some of the super sports cars that are offered on the market already. The other concerns are whether or not this car should be one that is offered with only a gasoline engine, a hybrid powertrain, or be an EV model for the future, which would certainly require more development and research over the next several years to make this the sports car we want.

Another school of thought would suggest the new S200 should simply be the development of the Vision Gran Turismo concept that was brought out as just a concept a couple of years ago. I the sales and the desire for a new S2000 are strong enough, you can bet Honda will be ready to produce a new top of the line sports car for us to drive. While we wait to see if Honda will make the S2000 again, we can continue to ask them to do so and hope the pressure of the desire for this car will bring it back to the market sooner rather than later.
